We offer two spinal surgical fellowship posts, each of one year duration. Typically one commencing in February and one in August of each year. Our fellowship is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

We recommend contacting us early to discuss posts as they are commonly appointed 1-2 years in advance. Visits are recommended before applying, but not mandatory.

These posts are created to provide training in all aspects of spinal surgery. The balance of the post can be adjusted depending on the requirements of the appointee. For a senior appointee advanced training in adult and paediatric spinal surgery will be available including spinal deformity as well as spinal sarcoma training. The post can also be adjusted to provide more basic training in spinal surgery.

Fellows partake in the oncall for acute spinal pathologies (tumour, fractures, infection) on a 1:5 rota. Fellows have no overnight or non-spinal on call duties.

This is a clinical fellowship but time and resources are available for research in spinal disorders. The department has several links with Newcastle University including the bioengineering laboratory. It is anticipated that fellows undertake a project that is presented and published whilst with us.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the ST3+ scale depending on previous service (appropriate documentation will be required). There is an appropriate banding attached to the post 1B 40%. The normal arrangements will be made for superannuation payments if appropriate. For non-UK trainees the salary is typically approximately £71,000 gross (£49,000 net, minus income tax, pension and NI).
